Bangalore: The State BJP on Tuesday criticised the State government’s decision to change the parameters for obtaining minority status for primary schools, terming it unconstitutional.

Addressing a press conference in Bangalore, BJP State spokesperson and former minister Suresh Kumar alleged that the government had succumbed to pressure from private managements by taking a decision to the effect that primary schools run by linguistic and religious minority managements need to have just 25 per cent of students belonging to the minority communities to obtain the minority tag.

Kumar pointed out that more number of institutions would become eligible for exemption from the Right to Education clause of reserving 25 per cent to poor students. In Bangalore alone, there are 2,500 primary schools and 60 per cent of them will get the minority status if the new criterion is applied, he said.

Kumar said the BJP government had issued an order that linguistic and religious minority managements should have at least 75 per cent of students belonging to the minority communities to obtain the minority status.

BJP State general secretary C T Ravi said the move was a continuation of the ‘Ahinda’ politics of the State government. It is against the spirit of providing special benefits to the minority institutions.
