Hassan: The 14-year-old sexual assault victim of Arkalgud, allegedly raped by her father, underwent medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) in Hassan on Friday.
The doctors, after seeking the victim and her mother’s consent, performed the procedure at 7 am at the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences. However, the foetus is being preserved for a DNA analysis. The victim also had to undergo blood transfusion in the evening, as she was anaemic.
Earlier, there was confusion between the government departments on whether to take up the procedure. Home Minister K J George and Minister for Women and Child Development Umashree had intervened and directed that action be taken as per the law.
Police will also probe the contradictory statements given by the victim about her pregnancy.
Two days ago, the girl had spoken to a section of media that it was not her father, but a person called Harish who had sexually assaulted her and was responsible for her pregnancy. Following this, the victim’s mother had appealed to the doctors not to terminate the pregnancy.
Later, when the officials concerned met the mother and daughter, the duo changed their stand and requested for an abortion, thereby arousing suspicion.
Superintendent of Police Ravi D Channanavar said the doctors had been directed to preserve the foetus for DNA analysis. Future action will be decided after receiving the DNA report, he added.
