Tumkur/Mysore: Derogatory remarks by writer M M Kalburgi against idol worship has attracted widespread criticism.

Kalburgi had recently stated that writer U R Ananthamurthy had once urinated on the idols of Hindu gods, to prove that they are not powerful.

Suresh Kumar, former minister for law and parliamentary affairs, told reporters in Tumkur on Tuesday that Kalburgi’s remark had hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus.

“We will initiate legal action against these so-called intellectuals who attack religion and religious freedom,” the former minister said. Kumar said these intellectuals lacked religious sensitivity and that they were heartless. The minister said Kalburgi should apologise for his remarks or face legal action.

At Gandhi Square in Mysore, members of the Mysore Rakshana Vedike staged a protest against Kalburgi and Ananthamurthy. They wanted cases booked against the writers or that they should be externed.
