Bangalore: A gangster who attempted to flee from police was injured after the latter opened fire at him near Devanahalli on Sunday morning.

A police sub-inspector also sustained injuries in the incident. The City police, late on Saturday night, arrested notorious gangster Kunigal Giri alias “Boss” and his three associates – Govinda, Jadagish and Vasu – at Hindupur of Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh.

Govinda attempted to give a slip to the police when the three were being brought to Bangalore in two vehicles.

“He pretended fainting and saidhe wanted to answer the call of nature. He was allowed to get down and inspector Balegowda followed him. After walking some distance Govinda threw a stone at Balegowda. He was about to throw one more stone when inspector N B Sakri and I opened fire at him in self-defence,” police inspector Rangappa told Deccan Herald. Govinda was injured on his knee and fell to ground. He was rushed to a private hospital in Hebbal. He was later shifted to Dr B R Ambedkar Medical College for further treatment, he said.

Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar said that Giri was in the custody of Hindupur police and they would soon seek them to hand him over.

Meticulous work

The City police tracked down Giri and his associates after a meticulously planned operation.

Following a spurt in complaints of attack against women and senior citizens, the police collected details from various sources including footage of CCTV cameras. It came to light that such offences went up after Giri and his associates were released on bail. The city police commissioner constituted a team of 20 officers to nab the gangsters.

The police started getting credible information about Giri’s movements a week ago.

“We went to Mysore on Saturday night as we got a tip-off that Giri was hiding there. The clue proved to be false. Later, we went to Hiriyur where also we drew a blank. But, while returning to Bangalore, we were alerted that the gang was in Hindupur,” Rangappa said.

The trio were hiding in the first floor of a rented house. They attempted to flee and attacked the police after coming to know that the house had been cordoned off. However, they were arrested with the help of the local police, he added.
