Bangalore: Copious rains in catchment areas pushed the water storage in the Tungabhadra reservoir by one tmc feet on Friday while heavy rains battered parts of North Karnataka on Thursday night.
The inflow into Tungabhadra reservoir near Hospet in Bellary district increased to 3,896 cusec pushing up the water storage in the dam to 3.37 tmc ft.
The people in the command area were worried a lot as water storage had plummeted to 2 tmc ft recently. Sandur in Bellary district received the highest rainfall of 114 mm while it rained 74.4 mm in Hospet.
Rayarakere on the outskirts of Hospet overflowed, inundating a tunnel on the National Highway-13.
Shimoga
There has been no significant rise in the inflow to Linganamakki reservoir despite heavy rains across Shimoga district. Rajamudy, KPCL Chief Engineer, Sharavathy, told Deccan Herald that the catchment area of the dam spreads to 1,900 sq km and there won’t to be any increase in the inflow unless it rained nonstop in the catchment area.
The inflow was at 1,390 cusecs and the water level stood at 1,760 feet against the maximum level of 1,819 feet.
Mysore
Widespread rains resulted in a slight increase in the inflow to Hemavathi and Kabini reservoirs.
However, there was no significant rise in the water level at Krishnarajasagar reservoir.
Inflow to Hemavathi reservoir in Hassan district, which has reached dead storage a few weeks ago, has brought reprieve to local residents. Venkataramanappa C M, Executive Engineer, said that the inflow stood at 475 cusecs on Friday as against 140-150 cusecs.
Water level at the Kabini reservoir in Mysore district stood at 2,265.04 feet on Friday, compared to 2,264.7 feet on Thursday. The maximum water level at the reservoir is 2,284 feet.
Nagabhushan S B, Executive Engineer of the reservoir, said that inflow was about 3,000 cusecs, as catchment areas of the reservoir, in Kerala had also received showers during the past few days.
Gulbarga
Rains lashed Gulbarga throughout the night on Thursday. Gulbarga city recorded 28.8 mm rains.
The maximum temperature came down by five degrees to 36.1 degrees Celsius.
Uttara Kannada
Electrical appliances and irrigation pumpsets were destroyed by thunderbolt in Honnegadde of Bhatkal taluk. The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains in Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Kogadu, Shimoga, Chikmagalur and Hassan districts in the next 48 hours due to a cyclonic depression over Arabian Sea.
Fishermen had been warned not to venture into sea.
Hubli
Owing to heavy rains on Thursday night, water overflowed from Tolanakere inundating Akshay Colony and Shirur Park.
A few houses partially collapsed at Padarayana Hakkal, Ganesh Nagar and other areas. However, there were no reports of casualty.
Raichur
People heaved a sigh of relief as rains pounded Raichur throughout night on Thursday bringing mercury level down.
Showers battered Bagalkot district till Friday morning brightening the hopes of sugar cane growers. Overnight rains virtually washed away the newly laid main road in Koppal thus exposing the shoddy work.
