CBI raids Central Excise Superintendent

Belgaum: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers on Wednesday conducted a raid on the office of Ashok Mehatri, the Superintendent of the Central Excise and Customs department.

The raid was conducted at the Central Excise Customs and Service Tax Office on Club Road.

According to sources in the department, the CBI sleuths reportedly investigated Mehatri for suspected irregularities.
A team of four to five CBI officials detained Mehatri after raiding the office. The raid lasted all day, but the CBI officials refrained from divulging any information.
They asked staff of the department not to interfere in any manner.

B Hareram, Commissioner of the Central Excise and Customs department, said the CBI officials were entitled to conduct raids. When asked for the reason for this particular investigation, he said that there were “different issues.”
No information was given regarding the raid and officials refused to comment on any developments.

Meanwhile, it has been learnt that Mehatri had been harassing an entrepreneur, Ashok Bangera, who runs a firm by the name Vidyut Power Systems.

Unable to bear the harassment, Bangera had complained to the CBI.
Based on the complaints, the CBI had been keeping tabs on the activities of Mehatri and detained him on Wednesday.
