While middle-class families are purchasing temple and authentic jewellery, elites are purchasing gold biscuits and coins.

Ram Kiran, store incharge of Bhima Jewellery, West of Chord Road Branch, said people are mostly booking necklaces this season, compared to last time when all types of jewellery were booked.

Bookings are in full swing for the last ten days. People are purchasing at the normal rate of Rs 2,830 per gm.

Auspicious occasion

Lakshmi K, a homemaker, said: “We booked a pair of ear-rings last week and we will take the delivery on the festival day. It is considered auspicious to purchase gold jewellery on this day, which is why we purchase every year. The reason why we booked in advance was because we can choose our favourite design and style. Otherwise, on the festival day, there is a lot of rush.”

Neetu K, another homemaker, said: “I have booked thin chains for my granddaughter. The rate of gold is increasing and we were told that it will be higher on the festival day. So, we made full payment last week and booked the chains. I will take the delivery on Friday.”
