One person with 50 per cent burns, is in critical condition

Three persons were injured when an electricity transformer exploded near the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) depot on 80 Feet Road in Koramangala VI Block on Saturday.

Sources in the Police Department said the three persons were passing by electricity transformer on their two-wheelers when the explosion occurred. And, they were shifted to St. John’s Medical College Hospital.

The injured persons were identified as Sridhar, resident of Johnson Market who is a manager in a travel agency, K. Hemanth, resident of Adugodi who is a software engineer; and Narayan Naik, resident of Padmanabhanagar who works for a private hospital.

The victims
Narayan Naik, who suffered 50 per cent burns, is said to be in critical condition. The police said he was heading to a blood bank to procure blood for a patient when the accident took place.

Sridhar, who suffered about 20 per cent burns, is said to be out of danger. Hemanth suffered minor burns, according to the police.

The transformer on the footpath belongs to Bangalore Electricity Supply Company. It caught fire after the explosion.

N. Jayanti, general manager (customer relations), Bescom, said that Bescom will bear the medical expenses of the three injured persons. “Some branches fell on the lines connected to the transformer due to heavy wind. This caused an internal feeder fault, which led to oil spilling out of the transformer. This happens very rarely. Our personnel have been pruning branches since the last one month wherever necessary,” she said.

She added that at least nine electricity poles had fallen due to heavy rains in parts of the city, including Nelamangala, Arishinakunte, Makali and Vajrahalli.
