Karaga festivities from April 12

BANGALORE: Bengaluru Karaga, one of the oldest festivals celebrated in the city, will begin on April 12. A tradition of the Thigala community, the annual festival is observed in areas around the Sri Dharmarayaswamy temple in Chickpet.

Indira SN, president, festival organizing committee, said the celebrations will commence on Saturday night (April 12) and go on till the midnight of April 15, when the mega procession of the goddesses will take place. “Since there is no restriction from the Election Commission, rituals will be observed as per schedule,” added Indira.

Legend has it that towards the end of Mahabharata, Draupadi created a huge army of Veerakumaras to kill a demon called Tripurasura. After killing the demon, Draupadi promised the soldiers promised to visit them every year during the first month of Hindu calendar. Hence the festivities.
