A 55-year-old woman, who was admitted to a private hospital on Hosur Road for surgery, has alleged that doctors operated on her right leg instead of the left.
Kamalamma, a garment factory worker residing at Begur, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday after suffering a fracture. Kamalamma told The Hindu that she slipped and fell in a restroom at the garment factory. As she had severe pain, she was admitted to hospital. “I had told doctors that I had severe pain in my left leg. I remember being taken to the operation theatre for surgery. When I was shifted to the ward on Thursday, I realised that the surgery had been done on my right leg,” Kamalamma alleged.
The surgeon, Dr. Kalyan, said, “She sustained a hairline fracture on her left ankle, which can be set right using a plaster. Once the swelling on her left foot reduces, it will be bound with plaster. Her right leg had a ligament tear and, therefore, needed surgery. We decided to operate on that.”
On regaining consciousness, Kamalamma informed her husband and family. Thereafter, a few organisations staged protests outside the hospital. They are demanding compensation from the hospital alleging medical negligence by doctors.
