Sargur, (Mysore dist), Dec 9, 2013, DHNS : A leopard, which had killed a farm animal at Jakkahalli in H D Kote taluk of Mysore district, was captured by forest officials on Monday, putting to rest speculations over the cattle’s death.

The leopard, a three-year-old female, had surfaced just a day after the man-eater tiger was captured in Chikkabargi, Sargur.  Forest department officials set out to capture the leopard at Jakkahalli village on Saturday. Cages were placed near the village, with meat kept as bait.

The leopard was captured in the early hours of Monday morning.

Deputy Conservator of Forests, S D Gaonkar, said the leopard had been released into Anechowkur Forest Range of Nagarahole National Park.

“There were rumours that a tiger was behind the killing of the animal on December 6 near the village. When its carcass was analysed, we were certain that a leopard was behind the attack, following which we placed two cages in different parts of the village,” he said.

Villagers, who had gathered to see the leopard following its capture, were angry with the forest department for its inability to control incidents of man-animal conflict in the region.

They said that people working in farms close to the forest faced a continuous threat from wild animals. Villagers had been continuously attacked by tigers, elephants and leopards. Forest officials should take the attacks seriously, they demanded.
