Rain wreaks havoc in 2 districts

Davangere/Chitradurga, Sept 16, 2013: Heavy rain in the two districts on Sunday wreaked havoc, causing damages to properties as well as crop loss.

As many as 20 houses collapsed and low-lying areas were flooded in Davangere city. The rainwater entered more than 400 houses and several families had to spend the night on street. They staged a protest, alleging that the authorities have not taken any measures to provide them shelter and food.

Holiday was declared to the Government Urdu Primary School at Shekharappanagar on Monday, as the rainwater had entered their classrooms.

Breach in tank

In Chitradurga district, Chikkajajur, Hiriyur and surrounding villages were the worst-hit. A tank at Gunjiganur near Chikkajajur in Holalkere taluk breached on Sunday night and the water from the tank inundated fields, leading to crop loss worth lakhs of rupees. Over 2.5 lakh fish in the tank were also washed away.

Goats killed

As many as eight goats were killed when a portion of a house belonging to Gurusiddappa collapsed at Bettagondanahalli near Dharmapur in Hiriryur taluk.

The family members, who were asleep at the time of mishap, had a narrow escape. The Abbinahole police have registered a case.
