Hubli, July 11, 2013: Karnatak varsity to introduce Political Management as a subject

In what could be termed as a first such move in the country, Karnatak University has proposed to introduce ‘ Political Management’ as a subject in Masters of Business Management (MBA) course.

The All India Board of Management Studies had constituted a committee headed by R P Iyer, former chief of Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata, to study the possibility of introducing new subjects for the MBA course.

The committee had recommended inclusion of more than 10 subjects including ‘Political Management.’

“Politics is not the last resort of a scoundrel now. Instead, it has now become the choice of the shrewd and the brilliant. It is now being made a part of the course curriculum,” said Dr A H Chachadi, Dean of Management Studies department at Karnatak University.

The syllabus

The proposed study discipline includes a whole gamut of knowledge to groom the student as a successful politician.

It deals with the primary task of winning over the electorate, particularly during election time, reaching out to more people with minimum expenses, prioritising and catering to the expectations of voters, ensuring equal distribution of funds, the  techniques for staying in touch with voters always and strategy for boosting personal charisma, Dr Chachadi said.

He said the curriculum also includes methods of maintaining contact with voters through social media – Twitter and Facebook and use of modern communication systems to gain political mileage.

Interaction with politicians – from Gram Panchayat level to Lok Sabha – will also be a part of the curriculum.

Professional training

“Very few politicians of the present day are discharging their duties in a scientific manner.

“The objective of this course is to create a pool of youngsters  with professional training in political management,” Dr Chachadi explained. This would produce better politicians, who understand their duties and work towards them.

Political Management is being taught as subject at Indian Institutes of Management and it is for the first time that the subject has been introduced at the varsity level.

The subject is being introduced as an optional subject for the second semester of MBA at IMSR College in Hubli for the present academic year.
