DHARWAD: The district and sessions court here on Friday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping his eight-year-old niece in January this year.
Principal district and sessions judge K Nataraj also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on 35-year-old Shivappa Basappa Kallur. The prosecution had filed charges under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012. The judge ordered Kallur to pay a compensation of Rs 15,000 and the state Rs 50,000 to the girl’s family.
The same judge had sentenced Shivanand Madar of Shibargatti village, Dharwad taluk, on June 28 under the same Act for raping a minor. The section provides for punishment of minimum 10 years of imprisonment and for life term.
Shivappa had been accused of raping his niece at Hire Malligawad village of Dharwad taluk on January 13. Acting on a complaint lodged by the girl’s father, Dharwad rural police had taken Shivappa into custody.
The girl was playing near her house when Shivappa tried to lure her with chocolates. He took her to a farm on the outskirts of the village and raped her. The girl had injuries on the face, neck and chest, and was bleeding. She returned home and told her parents that her uncle had assaulted her
