Madani case: Expedite trial, Justice V R Krishna Iyer tells President Pranab Mukherjee

BANGALORE: Eminent jurist and former Supreme Court judge VR Krishna Iyer has written to President Pranab Mukherjee to expedite the trial in the July 25, 2008, Bangalore blasts case . It will establish the guilt or innocence of the ailing accused, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader from Kerala, Abdul Nasser Madani, Justice Iyer said .

Justice Iyer’s letter to the President has been sent along with an appeal from Madani, who has been arraigned as the 31 st accused in the case . Madani has detailed in the letter how he has been unjustly showcased as a terrorist . The former judge said that criminal cases are kept pending for long and consequently “the victim of the trial has to suffer, although he is found innocent at the end “. | Justice Iyer pointed out that on an earlier occasion, Madani was suspected of being involved in the Coimbatore blast case and put in jail as an undertrial. However, after nine years, he was found innocent and set free . “It is a disgrace to the Indian justice system to put a man in prison for nine years and then let him free, and now he is again in jail,” the former judge said.

“Madani is suffering from diseases .As one interested in human rights and the decency and dignity of justice system, may I request you to see that the Karnataka justice system hears Madani’s case on a quick basis
