Bengaluru: A nine-year-old girl died here on Wednesday after she fell into an open drain near Kalyani Motors at Bilekahalli on Bannerghatta Road during the heavy downpour on Monday evening.

Following the alert, fire personnel carried out massive search operations, but could not find the girl’s body in the drain.

Geethalakshmi, who hailed from Tamil Nadu and was residing off Bannerghatta Road along with her parents, was the one who is suspected to have been washed away.

According to fire department officials, the control room received a call around 8.30 pm and the caller informed that a girl, who was walking along with her aunt next to the drain, slipped into it and was washed away. “We alerted the rescue team immediately and they reached the spot soon. They are carrying out search operations in the drain but no body has been found so far.”

Earlier, Puttenahalli ward engineer Ravi told Deccan Chronicle that the girl’s aunt was talking over the phone when the accident occurred. “It is said that her aunt failed to pay attention when Geetha slipped into the drain,” he added.

Following the incident, BBMP Commissioner M. Lakshminarayan rushed to the spot. He said that it was still not confirmed whether the girl was washed away in the drain. “The police too have not given us confirmed reports.”
