Mangalore, Jun 5: A young school boy was hit by an Eicher tempo while he was waiting for the school van at Gurpur here on Thursday June 5. The news was spread immediately after the incident, angry locals gathered at the spot and began a flash protest.
Rohit (6), studying in first standard in Pompei school, was waiting along with his mother for the school van on Thursday morning, when a speeding tempo hit him. The boy was severely injured and rushed to a hospital. The condition of the boy was critical.
It is said that the driver of the tempo fled the spot soon after the accident. The angry protesters blocked roads leading to heavy traffic jam in the area. They also damaged the tempo which caused the accident and burnt tyres to express their ire.
On this account the protestors demanded the road at Gurpur be widened. They said they had appealed to the authorities several times in the past to widen the road, but all proposals were stalled as there are temples and mosques on both sides and the road cannot be widened without them giving up land.
Police personnel are present on the spot and are consoling the protesters.
