Mahabala Marla is new Mayor of Mangalore; Kavitha Hoigebazar as Dy Mayor

Mangalore, Mar 13: Three-time councilor, Mahabala Marla, representing Kadri Padavu ward 22, has been elected as Mayor of Mangalore and Kavitha Hoigebazar of ward 57 as deputy mayor at the Mayor’s election held at Conference Hall of Mangalore City Corporation on March 13, Thursday.

The long awaited election for the post of mayor and deputy mayor of Mangalore was held in two processes.

Out of the 60 corporators and 2 MLAs, Mahabala Marla won by 37 votes, while 20 rejected and elected as the Fifteenth Mayor, while his opponent Tilak Raj from BJP, was rejected by 37 votes and five were neutral and missed the turn.

While it comes to the post of Deputy Mayor, Kavitha was nominated by Mahabala Maarla and seconded by Pratibha Kulai declared as the deputy mayor for the present year.

Thilak Raj’s name was nominated by Ganesh Hosabettu and seconded by Vijaykumar Shetty, while BJP candidate Poornima was nominated by Sudhir Shetty and seconded by K Rajesh.

Prior to the election process, Alape ward corporator Vijaykumar Shetty took the oath from all the 60 corporators in Tulu.

Both Mahabala Marla and Kavitha will take charge as the Mayor and Deputy Mayor from tomorrow and will designate the post till March 12, 2015.

This year, the post of mayor of Mangalore has been reserved for a candidate from general category and that of deputy Mayor is reserved for women from general category.

The chairpersons of standing committees are, Ashok D K  for Waqf committee, Jacintha Albert for finance committee, Ashok Shetty for health committee, Purushottam Chitrapura for accounts committee and Shashidhar Hegde for chief whip. BJP has elected Premananda Shetty as the opposition leader.
