Custom officials seize gold worth Rs 30,91,732 concealed in belt buckle

Mangalore, Feb 14: In another attempt to smuggle gold, the custom officers arrested a passenger carrying gold worth Rs 30,91,732 at  Mangalore International Airport on February 13, Thursday.

The arrested is identified as Sheminadh Puthen Purayil, a resident of Kannur, Kasargod who had carried gold weighing 1022.07 grams valued at Rs 30,91,732 concealed in a leather belt buckle set and inside a hair styling crimper set.

Sheminadh had arrived at Mangalore International Airport by Air India Express flight IX814 from Dubai at around 7.25 am.

According to the press release stated by the customs, passenger was detected with hand-held metal. The X-ray image showed the presence of high density metal.

As the officials rubbed the buckle set, the coating of the buckle scraped off indicating the presence of gold, while, two yellow coloured metal rods wrapped in black plastic covered were found concealed in two cylindrical tube-like parts of the hair styling set.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of assistant commissioner of customs Krishna Kumar Prasad, under the guidance of commissioner of customs D Purushottam for the further investigation.

The passenger arrested and produced before the magistrate who remanded him in judicial custody.
