Udupi: Leopard gets entangled in trap, dies due to internal injury

Udupi; Jan 03: It was reported in an incident, Leopard, which came to village, in search of its prey from forest, got entangled in a trap, laid for wild pig and died at 82nd Kudi village on Jan 02, Thursday at 11.00 am in the morning.

It was said that in a wire trap, which was laid for wild pig in Babu Naik’s place in Kudi village, near Hiriyadka in Udupi district, around 8 year old male leopard got entangled in it on Jan 01 at night. The members of the family did come to know about this matter at around 5.00 am in the early morning. Since knot, fell on its loin, leopard was struggling and after it got injured and hurt internally,it said.

The matter was informed to Udupi forest department officials. Immediately forest officials arrived to the place and started trying to remove leopard from the knot.Udupi forest officials informed to veterinary expert doctors of Pilikula Nisarga Dhama near Mangalore.But, before veterinary experts could arrive to the spot, leopard breathed its last at around 11.00 am in the morning.

According to the locals, leopard, which was straying in the surrounding area since two months. Locals were under extreme apprehension. Some people saw the leopard and are suspecting, this might be the same leopard. Thousands of public came to view the leopard.

It is said that there were no injuries on leopard’s body. But according to the Forest officials, leopard might have died due to its loin knot. The carcass of the leopard was then taken to the veterinary Hospital in Hiriyadka village and post mortem was conducted there. After the post-mortem, carcass of the leopard was taken to the nearby Panchanabettu forest. The carcass was burnt and buried there.
