Mangalore, Jan 2: District Bharatiya Janatha Party holds protest meet in front of the DC office on Jan 2, Thursday urging the government to withdraw the bill on arecanut ban.
Addressing the protestors, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that BJP government had implemented various projects for the development of the farmers, but the present state government has fully planned to destroy the main occupation of the state by imposing ban on arecanut.
He also said that during the yellow leaf disease, the BJP government had compensated the areca nut growers to incur the loss faced by them, but when the entire problem is cleared the government has come out with new problem to the farmers.
Former Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda said that, the BJP in 2003 had organized a padayatra to fight against the government for the rights of farmers. BJP always stood by the farmers, when they were committing suicide. But the present Central government and the state government do not have any concern for the farmers.
He urged the state government to immediately form a panel of advocates to fight for the farmers and withdraw the ban on arecanut immediately and compensate them.
District President of BJP Pratap Simha Nayak welcomed the gathering.
Prior to the protest meet, the protestors also carried out a rally from Ambedkar circle to DC office.
MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik, ZP President Koragappa Naik, MLC Monappa Bhandary, Gangadhar Gowda, Kumble Sundar Rao, Nemiraj Rai, Sunil Kumar, Sulochana Bhat, MLA Sullia Angara, Krishna J Palemar, Nagaraj Shetty, Rukmaiah Poojary, Yogish Bhat, Jayaram Bhat, T Balakrishna, Mallika Prasad and other BJP leaders were also present.
