Harsha Moily

Mangalore: Stressing on the need to field a young candidate from Dakshina Kannada constituency to win back the lost bastion, a section in the Congress is in favor of fielding Union Minister M. Veerappa Moily’s son Harsha Moily from the seat in the Lok Sabha polls. Dakshina Kannada was a bastion of Congress till 1991.

Since 1978, Congress has fielded only two candidates from Mangalore constituency (the present Dakshina Kannada) — B Janardhan Poojary and M Veerappa Moily. Poojary won 4 elections and lost 4 while Moily lost two elections.

Though Poojary’s name is doing the rounds for the 2014 election, a good number of Congress leaders feel that a new face is necessary to attract voters especially the young in the district.

“Harsha is a young leader with political experience. He has been working for the party and also upliftment of the poor in North Karnataka.

He led the campaign when Moily contested the 2009 election from Chikkballapur and also played an active role in Karkala during the 2012 by election to Udupi-Chikmagalur Parliament seat. He is a good organiser,” a Congress leader close to Moily told Deccan Chronicle. “People want young, dynamic leaders and Harsha fits the bill,” he said.
