“Konkani is our mother tongue. By reading and learning it we have become intellectuals. But in the present modernized world, we have lost interest and thus forgotten the language. It is our duty to preserve the language and promote it to next generation. Since state government has given us an opportunity to learn Konkani language in schools, we need to utilise this opportunity to make our mother tongue rich, said Rev. Dr. Gerald Isac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi Diocese.

Speaking at the concluding ceremony of Konkani Awareness Drive at Udupi Cathedral, he commended the intiative taken by Konkani Prachar Sanchalan to promote Konkani language and culture.Meanwhile Konkani street play `Konkani Mhozo Fuddaar’, directed by Christopher Dsouza and written by Arun Raj Rodrigues was performed by the artists of Konkani Kalakul troupe.
Victor Mathias welcomed the gathering. Prachar Sanchalan president Roy Castelino proposed vote of thanks. Cathedral parish priest Rev. Stanley Lobo and Bishop’s secretary Rev. Henry Mascarenhas were present on the occasion.The drive was flagged off on February 15, with the co-operation of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy to create awareness to learn Konkani in schools. The street play was performed in 40 places of Mangalore and Udupi district.
Darrel Dsouza Vamanjur, Melvyn Avinash Pais Allipade, Malcon Rego Derebail, Maria Joyce Vamanjur, Sunil Antony Siddhi, Sandeep Mascarenhas, Hanly Coelho, Anil Dsouza, Anant Kasargod and Rohan Lobo were part of the streetplay troupe.
Sandeep Monteiro Kayyar, Sheldon Crasta, Varnan Dsouza, Alvin Fernandes and Prem were the backstage crew members.
