UDUPI: What’s in a name? A lot, if your name is Anand and police are hunting for a namesake in a case of abduction and gang-rape. That’s the lesson Anand Poojari, an autorickshaw driver in Parkala, learnt when police investigating the alleged kidnapping and gang-rape of a 22-year-old medical student in Manipal nabbed him in Maharashtra.
Police arrested Anand on Thursday believing him he was the third accused but on realizing their mistake, released him. He arrived in Parkala on Friday.
When Yogesh Poojary, the main accused, attempted suicide on Thursday morning, he told police his associates were Hariprasad and Anand of Parkala. Police got information from locals that Anand Poojari was headed to Goa and rushed there.
En route, they called Anand’s mobile phone and found he was in Maharashtra and informed police there. When Anand was driving back from Nasik on Thursday afternoon, police intercepted him and took him to the police station.
