Mangaluru, July 15: Due to the rains, land caved in on a under-construction site in Farangipet, Bantwal Taluk resulting in the death of three labourers and injuring other three on Tuesday July 14th. The incident occurred in the afternoon near the Pudu panchayat office close to the National Highway near Farangipet junction.
Three workers were trapped inside while three others were rescued.
The deceased are identified as Milone (20), Memun (23) and Korikome (20), all from West Bengal. Khutubuddin from West Bengal, Raju and Jithendra from Bihar were rescued by police and fire personnels. The injured are admitted to Mangaluru district hospital. Shabiulla has escaped safely without any injuries.
Entrepreneur Muneer had undertaken this residential apartment construction works about six months ago. This site is situated near Jumadi Gudde which is located behind the Pudu gram panchayat office. The panchayat officials have informed that the entrepreneur was instructed to ensure that the land of the mountain does not slide. No retaining walls were constructed during the building construction to avoid the land slide of the mountain, said the locals.
The pillar construction works of the building are almost over and the workers were engaged in other works. From the morning on Tuesday, around 15 workers were engaged in the construction works meanwhile soil caved in from the mountain from a height of about 20 feet.
A worker came out of the debris with the help of pillar who was rescued by the locals. With the help of JCB, soil was removed and three others were rescued. But the remaining three breathed their last under heaps of soil.
Fire service personnel along with locals conducted the rescue operation, and after much efforts, the bodies of the three labourers were retrieved.
Huge crowd had gathered at the spot. The angry locals laid siege to the Pudu gram panchayat. They demanded compensation tot eh family of the deceased.
SP Dr SD Sharanappa rushed to the spot and took the situation under control.
