MANIPAL: Home minister KJ George on Sunday visited the medical student of KMC, who was allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted by three auto rickshaw borne miscreants on the college campus late on Thursday.
George was accompanied by Vinay Kumar Sorake, minister for urban development and district in-charge and the Pramod Madwaraj, Udupi MLA. George assured all possible efforts in nabbing the culprits.
A joint statement released by Dr G Pradeep Kumar, dean, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, and Dr (Col) M Dayananda, medical superintendent and chief operating officer, Kasturba Hospital quoted George as stating that security will be strengthened to make Manipal a much safer place. The Manipal University has increased the safety measures on the campus. The student is undergoing treatment at the hospital for injuries.
Referring to the incident, the statement said a student the University was abducted on the night of June 20 at 11.15pm while returning from library after her studies. Three men in an auto rickshaw came from behind and dragged her into the auto rickshaw and sped away. They tried to sexually assault her. She struggled hard and jumped out of the auto rickshaw and tried to escape. She had sustained several injuries including a fracture of the lateral malleolus.
She was taken to the hospital in Manipal and underwent surgical procedures for the injuries sustained. She is recovering well and will be back to her college very soon. She is a very brave girl who fought against all odds and was courageous enough to fight it out, the statement adds. The police have already set up eight teams under the supervision and guidance of Superintendent of Police MB Boralingaiah to nab the culprits.
