Protest staged by the CPI(M) City Committee forcing to provide sites for the poor.

Mangalore, October 14: A protest was staged in front of the Mangalore City Corporation office on October 13th Monday, CPM City Committee forcing to provide sites for the poor landless families in the city limits.

The CPM has warned that the struggle would be intensified if the party’s demand is unfulfilled.

CPM Mangalore City Committee Secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal addressed the protestors and said that over 5,000 applications have been submitted to the MCC in during the last decade, but no sites have been sanctioned yet to the applicants.

The CPM has formed a ’Horata Samiti’ comprising of the poor families that have applied for sites. Both the BJP and the Congress have been merely making statements and have not addressed the problem at all.

He said, the CPM had helped over 200 people to submit applications recently seeking sites, the MCC authorities sent a reply note to a few of them saying the documents were not authentic, ignoring the other applications. Let the MCC clarify about the necessary documents to be submitted in order to get the work done, he added.

Vasanth Achary CPM leader slammed the authorities for misguiding people, stating that government land in the city was not available, while large portion of government land is given for industrial and business purposes.

He queried that, how was it possible for the government to reserve hundreds of acre land for setting up golf course and other luxuries in Pilikula, when there was no land to distribute to the poor.

MLA J R Lobo and Mayor Mahabala Marla accepted the memorandum from the protesters and said, the plan to construct apartments and hand over flats to landless citizens was under consideration.

Mr Lobo has said “I have discussed with the deputy commissioner on implementing the programme”.
