Beijing: A woman in China was forced to terminate her pregnancy after her 13-year-old daughter threatened to commit suicide fearing that the newborn will become the favourite of her parent.
The 44-year-old woman, surnamed Xiao, decided to have a second child after China relaxed its one-child policy, which now permits couples to have two children if one of the parents is an only child.
“After Wen Wen (the daughter) learned about my pregnancy, she often said she would jump to her death from a building if we kept the baby,” said Xiao. “She threw things at home to vent her anger.”
When Xiao saw cut marks on Wen Wen’s arm, she and her husband were on high alert. Afraid of losing their first daughter, Xiao went to a hospital and ended her pregnancy after 13 weeks, local media reported.
“It is normal for the only child to feel unhappy when parents want a second child,” Hu Hongtao, a doctor from Hankou Hospital, was quoted as saying in the news report.
“Parents should first communicate with the first child and assure him or her that even if they have another baby, they won’t love him or her less,” Hu added.
