Kathmandu: At least 18 people were killed when a bus plunged about 500 metres in western Nepal, police said on Monday.

The bus veered off a mountain road in Surkhet district’s Kalikhola on Sunday night.

Fifty-five others were injured in the accident.

Security personnel helping with the rescue operation said the death toll was likely to rise because some survivors were in serious condition.

Locals reports said the driver’s assistant had been driving when the overcrowded bus crashed.

The passengers were mostly Nepali migrant workers going to India.
