LUCKNOW: Veteran Congress leader and former chief minister of Uttarakhand, Narayan Dutt Tiwari, 88, on Thursday married Ujjwala Sharma, the woman whose son he has accepted as his own after an extended lawsuit. The marriage ceremony was held at Tiwari’s residence here.

Sharma, a former college professor in Delhi, is the mother of Rohit Shekhar, who had filed a paternity suit in 2008 seeking to declare Tiwari as his biological father. However, Tiwari had repeatedly denied the claims.
Speaking to the media, Sharma said that the decision to get married was taken by Tiwari and she is very happy about it.

The 67-year-old Ujjwala had earlier deposed that at the time of Rohit’s birth, she had talked to the Congress leader regarding giving his name as the father of the child, but she was “not allowed” to do so.

“At the time of birth of the child (Rohit) as well as at the time of his admission, I talked to defendant No 1 (Tiwari), I wanted to give his name as father but on his pursuasion, taking his political career into consideration, I was not allowed to do that because he assured me that he intended to adopt the child and I trusted him,” she had said.

Earlier, media reports said Ujjwala Sharma had filed a police complaint against the Congress leaders’s officer on special duty Bhawani Bhatt and security personnel for not allowing her to enter Tiwari’s house.

The Delhi high court on April 24 had declared Rohit Shekhar as Tiwari’s biological son.

Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw allowed the plea of Shekhar, who in 2008 had filed a paternity suit claiming Tiwari as his biological father.

The court’s decision came after the senior Congress leader publicly accepted Shekhar as his biological son and his mother Ujjwala at a press conference in March.

The court, while passing the order, took into note the report of Tiwari’s DNA test which was taken on the directions of the court earlier and proved that Shekhar was biologically linked to him.
