BHUJ: In a tragic incident, seven members of a family – two couples and their three children – allegedly committed suicide in Ningal village, 30 km from Bhuj, on Sunday.
The couples – two brothers and their wives – first gave poison to their children and then hanged themselves. While police have ruled out financial problems as the reason, they are investigating if the family took the step owing to a religious belief.
The family was very religious and regularly conducted evening bhajans at their house. On Sunday, neighbours found something amiss as they did not hear the sounds of prayers. When one of them climbed the roof and looked inside, he saw three adults hanging and four bodies on the bed.
The deceased were identified as Raghu Zaru (32), his wife Laxmi (30), their sevenyear-old son Shyam, Raghu’s brother Lakhu (30), his wife Kanku (26), their four-yearold son Shashwat and five-year-old daughter Prachi.
“When we entered the house, a religious channel was running on the TV. Villagers told us that they always talked about religion and had even told them that they were going to Haridwar as they were tired of this world,” said Deepak Meghani, superintendent of police, Kutch East.
