With the Delhi Police Special Cell allegedly picking up two young men from the Jamia Nagar area of South Delhi on Sunday in connection with the arrest of four suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorists, angry locals came out on streets to lodge their protest.

Soon after the news of the alleged detention spread, area residents blocked the main Sarita Vihar-Noida road demanding immediate release of the young men. Preliminary enquiries indicated that one of those picked for questioning belongs to Dhanbad in Jharkhand.

The local residents said the two men were picked in the early hours on Sunday from E-Block of Abul Fazl in the Jamia Nagar area.

The locals accused the police of harassing the members of their community without concrete proof of their involvement in terror activities. The residents also questioned the police theory that they have arrested four people in Rajasthan.

“The police have actually picked them from some other place and have shown their arrest from Rajasthan. We do not have any issues with the police questioning the suspects, only if it is done in a lawful manner. Even in this case, the Special Cell people did not involve the local police before they raided the house and took the two men away early morning,” said Hameed, a Jamia Nagar resident.

The protest continued till late in the evening. The protesters said the police released only one of the two men allegedly picked for questioning

Tight-lipped over the questioning of the Jamia Nagar resident, the police said they “have all the right to question suspects”.

However, the police refused to reveal the identity of the person being quizzed for his suspected links with the alleged terrorists arrested in Rajasthan on Saturday.
