The Cabinet today agreed to raise the subsidised LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinder quota from 9 to 12 per household per year starting from February 1

At a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the proposal was approved that ensures that almost 99 percent of the population gets subsidised cooking gas.

The decision comes after Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi had asked the government last week to raise the cap on subsidised cylinders

Hiking subsidised LPG quota will cost Rs 5,000 crore more in subsidy, said Oil Minister M Veerappa Moily

The Cabinet has put on hold Aadhaar-linked transfer of LPG subsidy to bank accounts, added Moily

LPG had been fixed to 6 cylinder per household in 2012, which was later raised to 9 last year.
