Follow rules on plastic bags: Coimbatore Corporation

7PLASTICThe Coimbatore Corporation on Tuesday asked manufacturers, wholesale and retail sellers and consumers of plastic bags to follow rules or face severe action. At a meeting convened at the Corporation Kalaiarangam, Commissioner G. Latha said that the civic body had convened the meeting seeking their support in handling plastic waste and also asking them to follow the rules.

She said that as per the rules, the plastic bag manufacturers should not manufacture bags less than 40 micron and have the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board registration number and details on bags that were more than 40 micron thick.

The Coimbatore District Plastic Manufacturers Association’s president V.K. Balu, wanted the Corporation to create more awareness among the public saying that they should be taught to not mix the plastics and degradable waste.

M. Mohamed Rafi of plastics recyclers association asked the Corporation to create a facility so that the association’s members could collect plastics for recycling.

Mayor S.M. Velusamy said that the civic body was committed to reducing plastics in the city. Deputy Mayor Leelavathi Unni, Deputy Commissioner S. Sivarasu, senior officials and councillors participated in the function.
