tiger45 schools have been shut around the hill resort of Ooty in Tamil Nadu where a tiger has been on the prowl since yesterday.

The tiger killed a woman yesterday in the forests close to the town and has since been spotted close to human dwellings, said District Collector P Shankar.

“Forest authorities have zeroed in on the area where the tiger remains, which is close to some residential colonies, so we have shut the schools,” Mr Shankar said. Locals and tourists have been asked to stay away from the forest.

The tiger scare comes after three animal attacks over the last three days, in which three people were killed. In one of these killings, a panther is believed to be the predator.

The collector and other officials remained in the jungle till 2 AM this morning, overseeing a massive operation to track down the animal.
Forest officers are also roping in Khumki elephants that trained to drive away wild animals that stray into human settlements.
