Updated News;

Political parties expressed outrage over the “shameful and barbaric” treatment meted out to Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade in New York and asked the government to take every step matching US action till it gives an unconditional apology.

“The incidents should be condemned by all. More steps should be taken till the US gives an unconditional apology,” Union Minister and Congress leader Kamal Nath said as India announced a slew of measures curtailing privileges of US diplomats here.

“India should take the lead in sending a message to the US authorities,” he said.

Main opposition BJP asked the government to take up the matter strongly with the American establishment and even demanded arrestof American gay partners in India.

“The way she was arrested after being handcuffed, kept with drug addicts and strip-searched in the police station, that is condemnable, reprehensible and regrettable and in clear violation of conventions,” BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

Taking a dig at the UPA government, he said that the treatmentgiven to the Indian diplomat by the US “does not accord to the level of friendship that the Indian government claims to have with the US”.

“We would urge the Indian government, which tries to match each and every step of the US, to take serious action in this matter to establish the Indian sovereignty and prestige of its diplomaticcommunity,” he said.

Reacting sharply to the arrest of the diplomat, former External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha said the government should hit back by punishing same sex companions of US diplomats in India following the Supreme Court ruling on gay sex.

“Media has reported that we have issued visas to a number of US diplomats’ companions. ‘Companions’ means that they are of the same sex. Now, after the Supreme Court ruling, it is completely illegal in our country, just as paying less wages was illegal in the US,” the senior BJP leader said referring to visas issued to same sex ‘companions’ of US diplomats living in India.

Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade was strip searched and made to stand with drug addicts and sex workers by New York Police

Dr Devyani KhobragadeIndia’s Deputy Consul General in New York Dr Devyani Khobragade was strip searched in custody and made to stand with common criminals, drug addicts and sex workers by the New York Police.

The 39-year-old diplomat, a 1999-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, was on her way to drop her two children to school when she was stopped by police and handcuffed in full public view.

Shocked, Dr Khobragade protested immediately saying she was a diplomat and enjoyed immunity.

But there was worse in store. She was handcuffed, taken to a police station where she was stripped and searched.

“This is in grave violation of the Vienna Convention. United States authorities knew she was a diplomat and yet they deliberately humiliated her. The US is well aware of the legal status of the case with the domestic help which was being pursued in a court of law in India. In fact, India had sought US’ help in the case. Yet, the deliberate insult,” a source said.

The New York Police, sources say, were following orders that came from higher ups.

“With the United Nations in New York, diplomats from across the world live and work there. The New York Police knows better than to arrest and strip search diplomats. This was a move aimed at sending a message and test India’s response,” the source added.

This is the second time the New York Police has done so to Indian diplomats.

The first time, a diplomat’s young daughter was arrested and locked up on false charges. India protested but the feeble objection appeared to have further emboldened the US.

But this time, India refuses to take it lying down.

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, who is a former IFS officer, on Monday refused to meet a bipartisan US Congressional delegation.

“The speaker was extremely angry not because Dr Khobragade is a Dalit, but because the US did this to a woman diplomat, a mother of two. She is impressed by the manner in which Dr Khobragade handled herself with dignity. But as a former diplomat and a woman, Meira Kumar wanted to send a message,” a source in Parliament said.

Not just Meira Kumar, even Shiv Shankar Menon, India’s national security advisor, refused to meet the US Congressional delegation.

“Whatever the provocation, the US government had no business to behave in the manner in which it did. It is not an error of judgement by one police officer. This is far more serious,” the source said.

Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh, who has just returned from the US, had summoned US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell and protested the treatment meted out to Dr Khobragade.

The government says the matter is being taken up with the US and ill-treatment of a woman diplomat by the US is “unacceptable”.

“The American violence against Dr Khobragade is nothing short of barbaric. It is shocking that details should come out on a day when the nation is still recovering from the shock of the incident of violence against Nirbhaya (the Delhi gang-rape victim). Is there any difference between the criminals who acted against Nirbhaya and the New York authorities who have scarred the children of an able diplomat so horribly,” Rajiv Dogra, India’s former ambassador to Italy, said.
