Kolkata, December 10:  For the first time since a three-judge panel of the Supreme Court held that allegations of sexual harassment against him prima facie disclosed an act of unwelcome behaviour, retired Judge of the court, Justice Asok Kumar Ganguly, made it clear here on Tuesday that he would not resign from the post of chairperson of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC).

But speaking at an event organised by the WBHRC to observe World Human Rights Day later in the evening, he stressed that those who tried to uphold human rights of others had to pay a price. “I would always request you to remember that those who fight for rights have to fight after paying a price. Those who try to uphold the rights have also to fight by paying a price,” he said.

The former Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Somnath Chatterjee, who was present at the event, came to Justice Ganguly’s defence by questioning the authority of the court to look into the allegations and described the action of the panel as “overzealous.”
