New Delhi, Dec. 12: In a historic moment, women cast their votes for the first time ever in Saudi Arabia’s elections, marking a small step towards easing restrictions that are among the worlds tightest on women.

Women have also allowed to stand as candidates which is another historic first, even though the conservative kingdom is the only nation where women are not allowed to drive.

According to reports, A total of 978 women have registered as candidates, alongside 5,938 men and about 130,000 women have registered to vote.

Due to the gender segregation that has been enforced at public facilities, it means that female candidates cannot directly meet the majority of voters – men – during their campaigns.
