Allahabad: The Allahabad High Court on Thursday banned caste-based rallies in the state and issued a notice to all political parties on the same. The court said caste-based rallies divide the society and therefore no such rallies should be organised in Uttar Pradesh by parties.

A PIL was filed in the Allahabad High Court after former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati held a mammoth rally in Lucknow on July 7 to gather the support of Brahmins.

Mayawati has been reviewing her party’s preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections with special stress on efforts to increase its base among upper castes voters.

n the light of some 38 “Brahmin bhaichara sammelans” held across Uttar Pradesh over the past two months, Mayawati has urged BSP office-bearers and party leaders to further expand its base among the ‘sarv samaj’.

The ruling party – the Samajwadi Party – is also known for holding Yadav Mahasabhas in Uttar Pradesh to woo dalits.
