NEW DELHI, July 2;A CBI Superintendent of Police probing the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case and the agency’s Nagpur-based Special Public Prosecutor have received threats to their lives, leading the agency to seek security cover for them from the Union Home Ministry and the Maharashtra government. The first charge sheet is expected to be filed by Wednesday.
It is learnt that Sandeep Madhukar Tamgadge, a 2001 batch IPS officer of the Nagaland cadre, and the Special Public Prosecutor, both based in Nagpur, have been receiving anonymous threats over telephone.
“We have asked the Union Home Ministry and the Maharashtra government to provide security to our officers probing the case,” said CBI Director Ranjit Sinha on the sidelines of an Interpol conference here on Monday. As directed by the Gujarat High Court, the charge sheet in the case would be filed by July 4. The agency would seek more time to probe the conspiracy angle. As earlier reported by The Hindu, the charge sheet will focus only on the roles of police officers allegedly directly involved in the killing of 19-year-old Ishrat Jahan and three others in 2004.
