Mumbai: The Mumbai police has dug out more muck in the Sheena Bora murder case. Sheena was allegedly blackmailing her mother Indrani Mukerjea and had been demanding a three-BHK flat in Bandra, a prime locality in Mumbai. The police now believe this to be the possible motive behind Indrani’s decision to kill her own child.
Indrani along with her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai allegedly strangulated Sheena in a rented car in the bylanes of Bandra on April 24, 2012. The trio got rid of her body in the forests of Raigad district the next day.
The key accused Shyamvar Rai revealed new spine chilling details to the police during his interrogation, claming that Indrani was exceptionally violent while strangulating Sheena, according to a media report. She repeatedly said “now take your three-BHK flat in Bandra” in her murderous rage, Rai reportedly told the police.
Rai divulged these details to the police a day before he was sent to judicial custody, hoping that he would be considered an approver and meet a less severe punishment. An approver is someone who confesses his crime and gives evidence against his accomplices, usually in return for a less harsh sentence.
Rai’s confession could help the investigators piecing together the motive behind the sensational murder. During the course of investigation, the police had learnt that Sheena was allegedly blackmailing Indrani with the threat that she would reveal her secrets to Peter Mukerjea. Sheena allegedly demanded a three BHK flat in return for her silence. Sanjeev Khanna, co-accused in the case has corroborated with Rai’s version of the story.
However the police also continue to hold Sheena’s relationship with Rahul as a key motive too. Indrani was reportedly very upset when Sheena told her about her plans of getting married to Rahul. Indrani strongly opposed the match and urged Sheena to break up with Rahul because they were related to each other, but Sheena did not heed to her pleas. Sheena instead threatened to expose Indrani’s past and long held secrets to Peter.
However Indrani’s motive could have been more sinister than that, as police believe that Sheena’s marriage to Rahul could have posed a threat to Indrani’s hold over Peter’s property. There is ample reason to conclude that Indrani felt insecure about losing her authority in the Mukerjea household if Sheena married Rahul. But the police are yet to extract the real reason straight from the horse’s mouth.
