Chennai, August 24: A 32-year-old software engineer, who had collected advances totalling over Rs 4 crore from 22 people with the promise to sell them his two flats, was arrested by sleuths from the Chennai city central crime branch on Sunday. The techie had also already mortgaged his flats with banks.

The arrested was identified as P. Prabhu, a native of Tiruchy, and a resident of Perungudi. He was earlier working as a manager with a mobile phone service provider. Prabhu had told the police that whatever money he had collected from people by promising to sell them the flats, he had lost in online commodity trading.

“He wanted a large amount of money to invest in forex online commodity trading. So he started cheating people. He collected advance amount from 22 people showing them the flats. He managed to collect the money by talking convincingly but without showing them the original documents which were pledged to banks,” the police said. Police has so far received complaints from 17 people who were cheated by him.
