Farmer Gajendra Singh’s death: 4 unanswered questions

Politics and protests have continued over the tragic death of farmer during AAP’s kisan rally at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Gajendra Singh, a farmer from Dausa, committed suicide by hanging himself from tree during the rally on April 22, 2015. Here are four questions that still remain unanswered:

1.What killed Gajendra Singh?

* Was the note Gajendra left behind a suicide note?

* If so, was the note truthful about his state of affairs?

* Was he indeed thrown out of home, as it claims?

* Where did he get the cloth he hanged himself with?

* Was Gajendra at Jantar Mantar to fight his own battle, or was he there to voice the plight of fellow farmers?

2.Why it doesn’t add up?

* The note claims he was thrown out of family home by his father.

* Family says he was not thrown out.

* Villagers say Gajendra’s dad was fond of his son.

* He was no poor farmer. The family has around 17 bigha of inherited land.

* These lands are in the name of Gajendra’s father.

* Gajendra helped his father on the farm during sowing.

3.Was the crop damage angle for real?

* In March, unseasonal rains harmed crops in 33 Rajasthan districts.

* Gajendra’s village claimed 80% crop damage, but government apparently said it was about 30%.

4.Keen to make a name?

* Gajendra had told family he’d be back after appearing on TV.

* Was known to be a man with a fighting spirit, keen to make a name for himself.

* Had a weakness of photo-ops, won title ‘Mr Desert’.
