Srinagar: Omar Abdullah today formally informed governor N.N. Vohra that the National Conference was ready to back a People’s Democratic Party-led government in Jammu and Kashmir.

The move is being seen as an attempt by the NC to score political points over Mufti Mohammed Sayeed’s PDP, which is more inclined to tie up with the BJP. The PDP won 28 seats, BJP 25, NC 15 and the Congress 12 in the 87-member House in the 2014 elections.

“@JKNC (JK National Conference) has written to Gov. Vohra sahib reiterating our offer of support to @jkpdp (J&K People’s Democratic Party) & asking him to call us before deciding assembly viability,” NC working president Omar tweeted today.

An NC spokesperson said the party’s Jammu provincial chief, Devinder Rana, met Vohra in Jammu and handed him a letter from Omar.

“(The letter) urged the governor… to consult the party leadership before taking any final decision regarding the future of the present Assembly and its viability in the formation of a government,” the spokesperson said.

“Mr Omar Abdullah informed (Vohra) that the National Conference has offered support to the PDP, which has emerged as the single largest party in the just-concluded Assembly elections.”

The letter claims the PDP’s indecisiveness has led to a political impasse in the state. “(It has resulted) in the imposition of governor’s rule in the state and placing of the state Assembly in suspended animation despite an overwhelming participation of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the electoral process.”

The state was placed under governor’s rule last week after Omar refused to continue as caretaker chief minister and the key players failed to stitch up an alliance.

A PDP leader termed Omar’s move an attempt to push the party into a corner and said it would come out with an apt response soon.

“This party (NC) was routed in the elections but it is in more of a hurry than anybody else to form the government,” a leader said.

An NC leader said: “The PDP has been claiming our party has not formally offered any support to them. Today we put matters in black and white.”
