Lucknow: Two policemen have been suspended for negligence after a 35-year-old man was found at the Faizabad railway station near Ayodhya with his eyes gouged out.

Krishna Dev Verma, a resident of Jharkhand’s Giridih district, had come to Ayodhya on pilgrimage on December 24. Police said some locals befriended him in the city. On December 28, they drugged him and gouged out his eyes and he was left at the railway station, unconscious and bleeding.

When he regained consciousness and asked for help, he was admitted to a local hospital. The hospital alerted Varma’s family, who took him away on December 30.

The local police was officially informed by their Jharkhand counterparts. Thereafter, action was taken against a sub-inspector and a constable who had been on duty in the railway station area, said police sources.

A team from the Crime Branch is investigating the matter, said KB Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police, Faizabad. A four-member police team has left for Jharkhand to meet Verma and his family.

Such a crime is a first in the city and the police are looking at the possible involvement of local gangs, an officer said.
