Chandigarh : Two youths died after their motorcycle smashed into a roundabout on the road dividing Sectors 41 and 42 on Thursday night.

They were identified as Akshay Kohli (25), a computer engineer in a private company in Mohali, and Poshit Kaushal (22), who studied in a private institution.

Both stayed together in a rented accommodation in Phase 7 in Mohali.

Police said the accident occurred around midnight, when Akshay and Poshit were heading back to their residence.

It is not clear how the accident happened and who was driving as there were no eyewitnesses, said Inspector Ram Dayal, SHO of the Sector 36 police station.

Hearing the sound of the impact, locals rushed to their rescue and informed the police which took them to  Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16, where Poshit was declared brought dead and Akshay was referred to PGIMER, where he later succumbed to injuries.

Police said that both wore helmets. “There is a possibility that the vehicle hit the roundabout due to heavy fog and low visibility,” said the SHO.

“We have not registered an FIR as no other vehicle was present at the time of the accident. Inquest proceedings have been initiated and further investigation is under progress,” said ASP (South) Urvija Goel.
