Berhampur (Odisha): Hundreds of villagers on Monday staged a protest outside the office of DIG Southern range Amitabh Thakur here demanding action against a police inspector Krishna Prasad Das posted at Jarada police station.

The villagers alleged that the Inspector In-Charge on October 25 at around 1 am knocked at the door of a woman Mami Adhikari in Bada Brahmansahi in Patrapur.

As Mami, who was 9 months pregnant, started to open the door, the police inspector kicked open the door and the woman fell on the floor screaming in agony.

She was rushed to the local primary health centre in Patrapur, where the doctors carried out an ultrasound test and referred her to Berhampur Medical College Hospital. At the hospital, Mami gave birth to a stillborn child on Sunday.

Local villagers said the inspector Krishna Prasad Das was transferred early this year during the elections after local political parties alleged he was acting in a partisan manner. After the polls were over, he returned to his old posting in Jarada p.s. and then decided to take revenge, villagers alleged.

DIG Berhampur, SP Dr Sarthak Sarangi and State Human Rights Commission have entrusted the probe to the local DSP. He has been directed to give his report within 3 days. No action has been taken so far against the errant police inspector.
