Coimbatore: More than 350 students of Anan Kids Academy attempting to break the existing Guinness World Record, created the largest origami mosaic in an area covering 10,000 sq ft with the motif that of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi at the spinning wheel.

The previous record was held by Myrto Dimitrou and the municipality of Athens’ cultural, sports and Youth Organization at Mets Stadium in Athens, Greece, and the display consisted of 52,000 origami water lilies covering an area of 5511 sq.ft.

In an attempt to break the record, 60,008 origami lotuses have been made, using paper  as a 10,000 sq.ft mosaic.

The origami lotuses were made in six weeks by the students..The targeted time to  complete the motif was five hours and around 16 teams worked on the main motif and the border by the junior most members.

On an average 20 lotuses were made by the primary and secondary students. With the nation swept by the Swacch Bharath wave, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi , this is an attempt made by the students of the city to endorse it.

Hence the Guinness attempt,  said the Principal Mr Stephenson Gandhiji was chosen as the theme because he stood for self reliance, resilience, non-violence, purity of mind, simplicity and was an embodiment of an ideal citizen.

The principles that Gandhiji stood for, paled in the course of history and the student community felt that the revival of the Gandhian philosophy would create a renaissance of sorts, the principal added.

The origami of lotus measuring 5” X 5” was chosen mainly because it is the National flower apart from symbolizing knowledge, purity and wealth.

The colour scheme chosen too was in harmony with nature. The blue background speaks for the limitless heights to which our thoughts can be elevated. The white lotuses indicate passion for peace.

The earthy hue of the orange lotuses lends a sense of being firmly grounded. The black dispels ignorance.
