Thunder, lightning and strong gusts of wind were followed by intermittent showers across the UAE on Friday as most residents preferred the comfort of their homes on the weekend.

The mild showers, which began overnight, continued into the morning which contributed to bringing down the mercury level.

The Abu Dhabi Police received 1, 391 phone calls till 4am on Friday from people reporting fallen tree branches on roads and broken glasses at buildings.

The maximum temperature ranged from 22 to 28 degree Celsius in the coastal areas on Friday.

The National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) said the unstable weather could continue today also.

Cloudy and partly cloudy weather is expected which could turn hazy at times. Rain-bearing clouds could, however, decrease over some areas from today. The NCMS said there is a chance of rain over the northern and eastern regions in the morning. It also warned drivers to be cautious as fresh winds may blow dust and sand over land which could affect visibility.

Wind speeds could touch 75mph at times, it said, adding that the coastal regions of the country would bear the brunt of the inclement weather.

Humidity levels will riseto 70-95 along the coast. Boating and other marine activities must be restricted as the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman will be rough.
