The Abu Dhabi City Municipality on Wednesday launched a new project for road safety with the improvements of pavements, median fencing and electronic directional signage.

According to the municipality, the initiative is aimed at streamlining pedestrian traffic and for the safety of road users.

The project is being launched in cooperation with the Safety and Traffic Solutions Committee, which includes representatives from the Abu Dhabi Police, Department of Transport, and Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council.

“Theses initiatives improve pedestrian traffic on roads of Abu Dhabi and raise security and safety levels of the public. They are intended to place Abu Dhabi at the forefront of modern metropolis, and implement best practices to establish modern infrastructure, offering excellent services,” the department said in a statement.

The project includes sidewalks and new models of median fencing in Abu Dhabi. This week also witnessed the launch of the latest initiative where the municipality has installed pilot electronic directional signs in pedestrian tunnels at Hamdan Street.

“The project is currently being tested, where the municipality will assess the public satisfaction along with the impact of the new directional signs, before generalising them to all pedestrian tunnels in Abu Dhabi. This initiative coincides with the replacement of the metal fencing of medians by newly designed models made from improved materials capable of fending off jaywalking,” said the statement.

According to the department, the new electronic directional signs are designed with high specifications and are controllable via the GSM network; a technology that enables transmitting on-screen variable messages as per the intended purpose such as notifying road users of tunnel closure for maintenance or offering congratulatory messages to the public on Eid, or official events among others when necessary.
